The IMF warned that the ongoing infighting in Sudan could undermine the wider region’s economy, citing the Central African Republic, Chad, Eritrea, Ethiopia, and South Sudan.
These countries are already fragile as they receive waves of Sudanese refugees fleeing infighting and famine, the IMF’s deputy director for Africa, Catherine Pattillo, told AFP.
A famine was declared in July in the Zamzam camp for displaced people near the town of el-Facher, in Darfur.
Out of 10 Sudanese people forced to flee their homes due to the conflict, some 2.8 sought refuge in neighboring countries.
The conflict, opposing the army to paramilitary group RSF, has spread to 14 of the 18 states in Sudan, killing and wounding tens of thousands of civilians.
The warring parties have exacerbated the crisis by obstructing humanitarian access.
