Algeria reports Malaria, Diphtheria in its south

Algeria’s health ministry said Malaria and Diphtheria are spreading in its south on the borders with Mali.

The spread highlights the level of marginalization suffered by the Algerian south for decades after the country’s independence.

The ministry, however, blamed the spread of the disease on migrants, underscoring a long tradition of blame game by the central government.

A Carnegei report in 2021 by Dalia Ghanem stated that there was twice as much poverty among people living in the Sahara desert as among those in the coastal region.
