Moroccan railways transport 26.4 million passengers in h1
Some 26.4 million people used Moroccan trains to travel in the first six months this year, up 7% from the same period last year, rail operator ONCF said.
Revenue grew 8% to 1.26 billion dirhams as more people use the fastest train in Africa Al Bouraq connecting Casablanca to Tangier.
In total Al Boraq passengers increased 14% to 2.6 million passengers, as Morocco prepares to extend the network to Marrakech.
Freight transport grew 32% in volume at 9 million metric tons. This increase was largely driven by a remarkable 68% boost in phosphate transport compared to the first half of 2023.
Morocco’s rail operator ONCF said 90% of its electric trains are running on clean energy as part of a goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2035.
The fastest train in Africa, Morocco’s high-speed TGV linking Casablanca to Tangier is already using renewable energy.
