Libya: Dbeibah reaffirms need to hold accountable parties behind oil shutdown

Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah underscored the urgent need to hold accountable those responsible for the closure of the country’s oil fields during a meeting with Stephanie Koury, the Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya.

During their talks, on Wednesday, Dbeibah and Koury reviewed recent political developments in Libya and Koury’s recent briefing to the UN Security Council.

Dbeibah emphasized the crucial role of international cooperation and support in achieving consensus and addressing Libya’s ongoing crises.
He condemned the closure of oil fields, which he characterized as a criminal act carried out under dubious pretexts. He stressed that those responsible for such actions should face legal consequences.

This meeting followed the announcement by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aqila Saleh, and the government appointed by the House, led by Osama Hamad, regarding the closure of oil fields in protest against the Presidential Council’s decision to change the board of the Central Bank of Libya.

The meeting also came on the heels of Koury’s discussion with Khalifa Haftar in Benghazi, where they addressed the Central Bank crisis. The UN mission has indicated its intention to facilitate dialogue among the Libyan parties involved in the Central Bank dispute to seek a resolution.
