Sudanese army lifts ban on aid trucks in Darfur

The Sudanese army ended its 6-month ban on aid convoys in Darfur, one of the worst hit regions by the country’s civil war.

The first trucks loaded with food stuff and vital goods left Chad to Kereneik in Darfur where 13,000 face the risk of famine, the UN food program WFP said in a statement.

“WFP has food and nutrition supplies for around 500,000 people ready to move swiftly through the newly re-opened route,” the WFP statement added.

More than six million people face food insecurity across Darfur, and more than 25 million, or about half the population, across the country.

More than 10 million people have fled their homes and at least 18,000 others have been killed since civil war broke out in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
