Equatorial Guinea: Manuel Osa Nsue Nsua appointed new Prime Minister

Equatorial Guinea has a new Prime Minister. President Teodoro Obiang Nguema appointed Central Bank Director Manuel Osa Nsue Nsua on August 17, according to a decree issued almost three weeks after the resignation of the previous government, which he had deemed “ineffective”.

A young banker to manage the government, that’s the choice of the president of Equatorial Guinea with this appointment. It’s a new challenge for Manuel Osa Nsue Nsua, who has just turned 48 and has been Director of the National Bank of Equatorial Guinea since 2012.

This native of the continent learned his trade abroad, where he spent part of his life. He joined his sister in Spain when he was just six years old. While working to pay for his studies, he earned two bachelor’s degrees in business and economics, followed by a master’s in financial management.

He was then recruited privately by the Santander bank. He returned to Equatorial Guinea for the first time in 2012, at the request of the then Minister of Finance, to audit the central bank. At the end of his mission, he was offered to head the institution.

As Prime Minister, he will succeed Manuela Roka Botey, who was the country’s first female Prime Minister. She resigned just 18 months after her appointment, having come under heavy criticism from the President.
