Libyan infighting disrupts oil production at largest field

Forces loyal to Haftar disrupted production at the country’s Sharara oil field, operated by a Spanish company, in a move described as “political extortion” by the UN-recognized government in Tripoli.

Haftar’s forces tried to shut down the oil field in protest over a Spanish arrest warrant against Saddam Haftar, a key military figure in his father’s self-styled Libyan National Army (LNA), for alleged arms smuggling.

Hafter’s forces, who control eastern Libya, denied targeting production at Sharara, which they claimed was reduced due to protests.

Head of the protest movement denied they were involved in the slow production at the field accusing Saddam of issuing orders for a retribution through disrupting the field’s operations.

The UN has imposed an import ban on Libya and Italy has recently seized offensive drones disguised as wind turbines heading to the war-torn north African country.
