Violent protests over economic conditions grip Nigeria
Nigerian police used tear gas and mulls calling in the army for help as violent protests over worsening economic conditions grip the country.
The police used tear gas and gunshots to disperse the crowds in many cities, where protesters took to the street to voice their anger over inflation and bad governance.
Amnesty International said on Friday at least 13 protesters in total had been killed in three northern states, but the authorities have not commented on any deaths.
Dubbed “day of rage,” the protests emulate similar unrest in Kenya over high taxes.
However, in many instances, Nigeria’s protests turned into looting, with three states at least declaring curfews.
