U.S. Ambassador to Algeria: Washington’s Recognition of Moroccanness of Sahara is Irreversible and Historical Fact
The Algerian regime has been smacked with the remarks of U.S. Ambassador to Algeria Elizabeth Moore Aubin who affirmed that the American recognition of Morocco’s full sovereignty over its entire Saharan territory is a “historical fact” and an irreversible decision as evidenced by the Biden Administration which has maintained the U.S. stand announced by former President Donald Trump.
In an interview with Algerian newspaper “La Patrie News” (close to ruling junta), the U.S. diplomat confirmed the unchanged position of the United States on the Moroccanness of the Sahara, dealing a hard blow to the Algerian rulers who spent billions of Algerian taxpayers’ money on a lost cause.
“I arrived in Algeria in February of 2022, ex-President Trump announced U.S. recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara in 2020, and President Biden maintained the decision because it’s a historical fact,” said the U.S. Ambassador.
In parallel, the Biden administration took a different path, supporting the leadership of the United Nations, through the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy for Sahara to find a lasting solution to the Sahara issue, said Mrs. Moore Aubin.
Asked about Washington’s opposition to “self-determination referendum” in the Sahara and its vision for resolving the conflict, the U.S. ambassador said: “the solution we want is one that meets the needs of the Sahrawi people”, describing Morocco’s autonomy plan offered for the Sahara under its sovereignty as a “viable solution”.
Since 2008, “We have not changed our view and stand” on the Sahara, underlined the U.S. ambassador, giving the Algerian authorities a bitter reality check about the failure of their anti-Moroccan policy, while their military and financial supports of the Polisario are becoming a liability and a threat to regional stability.
