Sudan’s infighting triggers worst internally displaced crisis in the world

At least 9.1 million Sudanese civilians have been forced to internal displacement following 14 months of a civil war that shows no end in sight, according to UNHCR figures.

“Sudan now has the largest internally displaced population ever reported,” UNHCR said in a recent report.

Some 2 million people managed to flee to neighboring countries, mostly Chad and South Sudan which received the largest numbers of refugees, followed by Egypt and Ethiopia.

In addition to war, 20 million lives in the country are threatened by hunger, or 42% of the population, it said.

The conflict has killed tens of thousands though there is no official tally as the infighting prevents aid workers from taking stock of the human tragedy.

The war opposing the Sudanese Army to the paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF) has dragged on for more than a year turning the country into the largest humanitarian crisis on the planet.

The UN said it has received only 17% of the 2.7 billion dollars needed to address the humanitarian situation in the country.
