Collaboration between Spain’s Guardia Civil and Morocco’s DGST led to arrest of 8 terror suspects

The security services of the Spanish Civil Guard and Morocco’s General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) announced on Friday having arrested a group of eight terror suspects in a joint operation.

The operation led by the Guardia Civil, in collaboration with the DGST, resulted in the arrest of a group of young people who had been radicalized by ISIS, according to a joint statement from the two security services.

The eight people were arrested during operations in the Spanish enclave of Melilla as well as in Madrid, and Malaga.

The suspects were brought before court on Thursday, and five of them have been held in provisional detention.

The group of young people had undergone a process of radicalization according to the most violent tenets of the terrorist organization ISIS.

In this operation, the cooperation and constant and quality support of the DGST enabled the progress of the investigations. This highlights the importance of international cooperation between anti-terrorist services to address this threat and the significant challenge of anticipating terrorist actions.

On July 1, another alleged jihadist was arrested in Cornellà (Barcelona). He used social media platforms and encrypted instant messaging to advocate violence for terrorist purposes.

The extremist individual’s media activity focused on creating jihadist multimedia content using specialized editing applications supported by artificial intelligence. Despite his youth, he established himself as a recognized virtual terrorist fighter, greatly influencing the individuals he sought to radicalize. This individual was also presented to the judiciary on Thursday, July 4.
