Burkina Faso reiterates support for Morocco’s Atlantic access initiative

Burkina Faso reaffirmed its full support for the initiative launched by King Mohammed VI aiming to help landlocked Sahel states access the Atlantic Ocean and global trade.

Burkina Faso’s foreign minister Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré said following talks in Rabat with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Boourita.

Traore described the initiative as embodying south-south cooperation in line with a win-win approach that would help promote African prosperity.

Burkina Faso, Mali and Chad had already adhered in December 2023 to the royal initiative during a meeting in Marrakech, underscoring the beneficial impact for landlocked states and welcoming Morocco’s willingness to open up its infrastructure and ports to their goods.

A Burkinabe delegation is visiting Morocco “to discuss the details of this project. Our expectations are high,” said Traore.

The Atlantic initiative is designed to boost social and economic developments in the region, said Bourita, adding that the Burkinabe delegation points to the beginning of the implementation of this large-scale regional integration project.
