Morocco takes part at international conference on urgent humanitarian response for Gaza

The high-level international conference on the urgent humanitarian response for Gaza kicked off on Tuesday in Jordan, in the Dead Sea region, with the participation of Morocco.

King Mohammed VI is represented at this Conference, which is being held at the joint initiative of Jordan, Egypt and the United Nations, by Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch.

The conference, held under the theme “The Call for Action: Urgent Humanitarian Response for Gaza”, aims to identify ways of strengthening the international community’s response to the humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip.

Participants will also identify effective mechanisms and measures to achieve a collective and coordinated response to the humanitarian situation in Gaza, and a consensus on practical measures to meet immediate needs on the ground, while seeking commitment for a collective coordinated response to address the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

The conference is attended by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, heads of State and government representing over 75 countries, and representatives of humanitarian organizations and international financial institutions, according to the organizers.

The war in Gaza, which erupted on October 7, is causing extreme suffering for the entire population of over 2.3 million Palestinians across the Strip. People in war-torn Gaza face threat of famine, widespread trauma and suffer from lack of access to food, water, shelter or medicine due to the Israeli blockade on the tiny Palestinian territory.

UN Chief Antonio Guterres had warned that the Gaza Strip was in the midst of an “epic humanitarian catastrophe”, while the World Food Programme and other international relief organisations said that parts of Gaza are now gripped by “a full-blown famine”.

Israel’s ensuing air and ground war on Gaza has killed over 37,000 Palestinians, the health ministry in the territory said, adding that thousands more dead are feared buried under the rubble.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken who is taking part in the conference announced that an additional $404 million in US assistance has been allocated to Palestinians in Gaza, and called on other nations to contribute to addressing the humanitarian crisis in the war-torn strip.

In his address before the conference, Blinken highlighted the dire situation on the ground, and stressed the urgent need for aid. “We need to ensure more aid is delivered to Gaza,” he said, noting that hospitals in the region are struggling to function. “Hospitals in Gaza are unable to operate and provide assistance,” he added.

Moreover, in a series of urgent statements, Blinken underscored the broad international support for a ceasefire in Gaza and emphasized the necessity of further humanitarian efforts.
