Morocco named best African golf tourism destination
The International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) has given Morocco the award of “Africa’s Best Golf Tourism Destination of the Year” at an event in Malaga celebrating the country’s diversified golf resorts and courses scattered across the country.
The distinction was awarded following a vote by 660 golf operators who took into account the quality of courses in the country and customer surveys.
“This recognition attests to the efforts of the Royal Moroccan Golf Federation and the ONMT (the tourism promotion office NDRL) in developing sustainability in Golf courses, enhancing the travel experience and promoting golf tourism,” the ONMT said in a statement.
Morocco has a long golf history, with the first course designed by British architects in Tangier back in 1914.
With some 45 courses, Morocco offers golfers a chance to experience the sports in different landscapes, whether near the coast, the mountains, plains, and even in semi-desertic areas.
The North African country has also been hosting international golf tournaments, notably the Hassan II Golf Trophy, which was founded in 1971.
