Gambia’s President addresses message to King Mohammed VI

President of The Gambia, Adama Barrow, has addressed to King Mohammed VI a written message, whose contents were not disclosed.

The message was handed over by Gambian Foreign Minister Mamadou Tangara to his Moroccan peer at a meeting held Monday in Rabat.

In a statement to the media following the meeting, Tangara described bilateral relations as “excellent” and commended the Kingdom’s considerable support, under the leadership of the King, for the success of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Summit, scheduled for May 4 and 5 in The Gambia.

He reiterated his country’s willingness to work hand in hand with Morocco to achieve the goals set for a prosperous, united and stable Africa, stressing the importance of the Royal Atlantic Initiative, which guarantees stability and prosperity.

The Gambian top diplomat also took the opportunity to reaffirm his country’s support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its entire territory, including the Moroccan Sahara.
The Gambia was among the first countries to have opened a consulate in Dakhla in January 2020, a token of its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, and in January 2024, the third session of the Morocco-Gambia Joint Cooperation Commission was held in this very Saharan city.

During this session, The Gambia reiterated its “unwavering” support for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom and its endorsement of the Autonomy Initiative as the only “credible and realistic” solution for resolving the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
