Xlinks mulls exporting energy to Germany
Xlinks, which plans to export renewable energy from Morocco to the UK, said it is also assessing feasibility of other links with markets including Germany.
This came in a statement in response to a Bloomberg article claiming the British company is abandoning the UK for the German market.
“Xlinks was founded to promote the development of long-distance energy projects, with the Morocco – UK Power Project as our primary target,” the statement said.
“It was always our vision that this project would serve as a model for further links that support the transition to clean and sustainable energy. It is in this context that we are exploring the feasibility of other markets,” it said.
Xlinks was founded in 2019 by Simon Morris. The company is backed by some of the biggest global energy brands as investors including Total Energies, Octopus Energy, and Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA).
The project aims at channeling clean energy from Moroccan solar and wind parks to satisfy 8% of the UK’s energy needs with a capacity to power up to 7 million British households.
The interconnection is expected to cost about $25 billion, including about 1.7 billion of subsea cables.
