Qatar backs Morocco’s sovereignty over Sahara as Algeria’s kingmaker visits
As Algeria’s military ruler general Said Chengriha visits Doha, Qatari foreign minister was attending a Gulf Cooperation Council meeting that reiterated support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara territory.
Chengriha and his propaganda apparatus bit their tongues in a country where the military came to the rescue of a diplomacy in disarray leading to more blunders and further isolation of the oil and gas rich country.
The GCC meeting reaffirmed support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and backed King Mohammed VI Atlantic initiative to offer Sahel countries access to global trade.
The position of Arab gulf states is clearer in backing Morocco on an artificial dispute perpetuated by Algiers through its generous support to the Polisario separatist militias.
The GCC position further highlights Algeria’s isolation within the Arab neighborhood where it has chosen covert alliance with Iran with its destabilizing agenda in the region.
After years of ruling the country behind a thin civilian curtain, Algerian army ruler Chengriha is now openly steering the country’s foreign policy. The country has tried three foreign ministers since puppet civilian president Tebboune took office.
During Tebboune’s term, Algeria has suffered painful diplomatic setbacks starting with US recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara to Algeria’s BRICS debacle, not to mention worsening ties with its Sahel neighborhood where Mali openly accused Algiers of stoking terrorism and meddling in its domestic affairs.
As it continues to pursue the separatist chimera, Algeria is poised to further undermine itself in a rapidly evolving world geering towards more support for Morocco’s historic rights to the Sahara territory.
