Spain’s official gazette recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over Sahara
In a reference to Laayoune as a Moroccan city, the Spanish official gazette has reflected the official position of the country in support of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara.
The Spanish official gazette had in August cited Laayoune in a text, in a move that shows Spanish commitment to its 2022 declaration in which it recognized the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the “sole” solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara.
Spanish support for Morocco over the Sahara issue has paved the way for stronger economic, cultural and security cooperation ties between the two neighboring Kingdom’s.
Spain is now Morocco’s largest trading partner and the two countries have strengthened their cooperation against extremist and trafficking networks.
Cooperation to curb illegal migration flows has also been fostered with the number of migration attempts to mainland Spain dropping significantly.
