Tunisia’s Ennahdha appoints new Secretary General
The Islamist Ennahdha party, Tunisia’s largest political movement, has appointed Ajmi Ourimi as the new Secretary General of the party since the resignation of Zied Laadhari who stepped down in the wake of the 2019 legislatives.
The shura council of the party reportedly met October 30-31 to agree on the prerogatives of the new Secretary General. The party’s new Secretary General also holds the position of Vice-President of the movement, in addition to his membership of the Executive Board.
Ourimi’s appointment comes as the party’s caretaker President Mondher Ounissi is still behind bars since his arrest in September in connection with a leaked audio tape in which the political figure allegedly calls for the removal of some senior members of the Islamist movement.
Ounissi rose in April 2023 as the caretaker of the Islamist movement in the absence of incumbent leader Rached Ghannouchi, currently imprisoned on several charges.
In addition to Ghannouchi, several senior party members are in prison in connection to a case of plot against the State.
