Moroccan wins bronze in Women’s Marathon at World Athletics Championships

Morocco’s Fatima Ezzahra Gardadi won the bronze medal in the Women’s Marathon at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest on Saturday, becoming the first Moroccan athlete to compete and get a medal in this category.

Gardadi, 31, completed the 26.2-mile course in 2 hours, 25 minutes, and 17 seconds.

Ethiopian Amane Beriso Shankule won the gold medal with a time of 2 hours, 24 minutes and 23 seconds; while Gotytom Gebreslase, also from Ethiopia, gleaned the silver medal in a timing of 2 hours, 24 minutes and 34 seconds.

This is Morocco’s second medal in the tournament after Soufiane El Bakkali snatched gold in the 3,000m steeplechase.

Morocco is represented by 17 competitors, 12 men and 5 women, in the current 2023 World Championships.

Morocco had previously competed in 18 World Athletics Championships, winning a total of 31 medals (11 gold, 12 silver, and 8 bronze medals).
