Morocco breaks heat record in August

Several Moroccan regions witnessed a heat wave topping 50C as in the coastal city of Agadir, weather monitoring authorities said.

The heat wave was felt across the country with the highest impact in central and southern Morocco where towns traditionally known for mild summer weather such as Essaouira recorded 48C.

Agadir broke the country’s record at 50.4C, which is 0.33C higher than the 2019 record.

The heat wave triggers fears of climate experts who have been warning of a dire impact for Morocco which already suffers from water stress.

Other experts also warn of climate migration within the country as heat wave cycles become longer and recurrent.
