Integration of migrants into social protection systems illustrates Morocco’s inclusive approach

The integration of migrants into Morocco’s social protection systems is a perfect illustration of the Kingdom’s comprehensive and inclusive approach to migration, Morocco’s Permanent Representative in Geneva, Omar Zniber said on Wednesday.

Speaking during the 32nd session of the Standing Committee on Programs and Finance of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the diplomat noted that Morocco’s policy in this area is based on respect for the fundamental rights of migrants, with a focus on their social and economic integration, while ensuring that the needs of vulnerable populations are taken into consideration.

This approach is based on the implementation of the Marrakech Pact and of the new development model, he said, pointing out that migrant populations in Morocco have benefited and will benefit, in the same way as Moroccans, from the generalization of compulsory health insurance, family allowances, and compensation for loss of employment.

“Morocco is not only making a national commitment but also an international one, as shown by the Rabat Declaration adopted on the sidelines of the 3rd Global Consultation on the Health of Refugees and Migrants,” the diplomat added.

In this perspective, the Kingdom has called for greater social protection for migrants and populations in vulnerable situations, particularly internally displaced persons.

“It is essential to take tangible measures to guarantee fair access to basic services such as education, health, housing, drinking water, and sanitation,” he said, stressing the importance of promoting decent employment opportunities and vocational training to foster the economic empowerment of migrants and vulnerable populations.

Out of a total of 258 million migrants, only 59 million enjoy full access to social protection, Zniber deplored.
