Sahara: Malta reaffirms support to Morocco’s Autonomy Plan offering lasting & peaceful resolution

The Government of Malta has reaffirmed its strong support for the autonomy plan offered by Morocco under its sovereignty for a lasting settlement of the Sahara issue, saying the plan makes a “serious and credible” contribution to the UN-led political process seeking to find an enduring and peaceful solution to the Sahara regional conflict.

The supportive stance was expressed by Malta’s foreign minister Ian Borg following talks held Monday in Rabat with Moroccan peer Nasser Bourita.

In a joint statement released following the ministers’ meeting, Malta says it encourages all parties to the Sahara conflict to show greater political will to reach a definitive solution and to re-engage in the UN’s efforts in a spirit of realism and compromise.

The Maltese FM also reiterated his country’s firm backing to the UN-exclusive role and framework for reaching a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution to the Sahara issue in accordance with UN Security Council Resolutions 2602 and 2654
