Chad denies alleged support for belligerents in Sudan
The Chadian government has brushed aside reports that Ndjamena is backing up the Sudanese army in the ongoing internal conflict opposing it to the paramilitary group, Rapid Support Force (RSF).
The Foreign ministry of the central African country has issued a statement in response to media reports citing a diplomatic source that the transitional government led by Mohamed Idriss Deby is endorsing the Sudanese government.
“In these circumstances, the Minister of Foreign Affairs remains the most reliable diplomatic source,” the statement said.
The statement also slammed the reports, which the ministry believes, are meant to tarnish the image of the country.
Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, and its sister cities Omdurman and Bahri have been rocked by fierce battles between the army and the RSF. The showdown, which entered the second week last Saturday has left hundreds dead and thousands wounded while survivors cope with shortages of electricity and food.
Chadian authorities announced last week that over 300 Sudanese soldiers have fled the fighting and crossed into Chad to seek refuge for fear of being killed by RSF troops. The country also evacuated 438 Chadians from Khartoum back home.
