Global Electricity Review 2022 lauds Morocco’s wind power achievements

Morocco was cited as a good example in the Global Electricity Review 2022, thanks to its investments in wind power which now accounts for 17% of the country’s energy mix.

The report, published by energy think tank Ember, highlights Morocco’s continental leadership in clean energy which outperformed the global average of 12%.

The share of global electricity from wind stood at 10% while all clean electricity sources generated 38% of the world’s electricity in 2021, more than coal (36%).

However, the report notes a global rise in coal power by 9.0% in 2021 to 10,042 TWh, a new all-time high and 2% above the previous record set in 2018.

Most demand for coal came from China whose share of global coal power rose from 50% in 2019 to 54% in 2021.
