Tunisia: Soldier wounded by IED in a restive region

A Tunisian soldier has suffered injuries after an improvised explosive device (IED) planted in the country’s restive center-west region exploded and wounded his leg, the Ministry of Defense said on Wednesday.

The soldier has been whisked to the military hospital in capital Tunis for treatment. His condition is stable, the ministry added.

Several soldiers were wounded in the past in similar incidents. In June 2022, another soldier sustained injuries after an IED exploded in the military zone of Kasserine province. The blast occurred during a military combing operation in the Mghila mountain for terror groups.

The mountains in Kasserine, western Tunisia, are used as a safe-haven by militants. Tunisian security forces have lost several personnel in ambushes and attacks by militants in the province.

In a separate report, a court in Tunis judged four children aged between 15 and 17 on terrorism promotion charges and building contact with terrorists. The children were reportedly arrested in Kasserine province.
The court handed them sentences ranging from one to three years, in correction centers.
