Morocco unveils $590 mln road map to develop tourism

Morocco announced a road map worth 6.1 billion Dirhams (590 million dollars) to attract 17.5 million tourists and 12 billion dollars in tourism receipts by 2026.

The sector has turned the page on the pandemic with arrivals increasing to 11 million in 2022, that is a recovery rate of 84% compared with 2019.

The road map targets the creation of 200,000 jobs as it places priority on training qualified human capital, the government said in a statement.

To achieve these goals, the road map provides for doubling air capacity, promoting Morocco destination, and creating and developing hotels.

A deal was signed in this respect between the ministries of the interior, tourism, transport and logistics, youth and culture, finance and the tourism professionals’ confederation.

Speaking on this occasion, Akhannouch highlighted the centrality of tourism in the national economy and recalled the government support during the pandemic when it offered 200 billion dirhams to help tourism professionals mitigate the impact of restrictive measures and keep jobs.

Morocco is poised to attract more tourists thanks to the global exposure it has gained during the World Cup and after the announcement of the joint bid to host the World Cup together with Spain and Portugal.
