Egypt, Greece to carry out feasibility studies for underwater electricity interconnection project
Egypt and Greece are working to hire an international consultancy office to carry out feasibility studies for the $4 billion electricity interconnection project between the two countries, Asharq Business reports, citing 3 unnamed sources familiar with the matter.
“Selecting a consultant is the most important step of the project,” one of the sources said, adding that “after the completion of the technical feasibility studies and cable route, tenders will be launched equally between Egypt and Greece to choose suppliers to carry out the interconnection process.”
The shortlist of consultancy offices includes Électricité de France (EDF), Canadian Elia Grid, Italian CESI, DNVGL, Germany’s LAHMEYER, Irish EBSI, and four other Greek, Belgian, Chinese, and American offices.
Egypt and Greece in 2021, signed a memorandum of understanding to build a large undersea power cable linking the two countries, which is the first agreement of its kind signed between Europe and Africa in the southeastern Mediterranean.
The project will transfer clean energy from Egypt to Europe via Greece, and Athens will use part of the energy for industrial uses.
