Morocco foils ISIS terror plot, arrests 3 extremists

Moroccan authorities announced on Thursday the arrest of three ISIS operatives who were planning to carry out terrorist attacks in the North African Kingdom.

Aged between 19 and 28, the jihadists were nabbed by counter-terror units in simultaneous operations conducted in the cities of Tetouan, Larache and Souk El Arbaa.

After raiding their homes, the police found several weapons and Daesh propaganda material including flyers, documents, and publications of jihadist activities in the Sahel.

According to preliminary investigation, the three extremists were planning to escape Morocco to Daesh camps in the Sahel region after carrying out their terrorist attacks in coordination and support of the ISIS members.

In its 2021 Country Reports on Terrorism, the United States praised Morocco’s continued efforts to fight terrorism through a strategy, combining security, economic and human development in addition to the fight against radicalization.
