Türkiye-Earthquake: Moroccan Woman among Dead

A Moroccan woman was confirmed dead in the powerful earthquake that hit on Monday Türkiye and Syria Monday.

The Moroccan embassy in Ankara said the woman, 51, died in Antakya. She was married to a Turkish citizen. Her 16-year-old son was slightly injured in the quake.

King Mohammed VI has offered his condolences to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. “On this sad occasion, I send you and the grieving families, on my own behalf and on behalf of the Moroccan people, our sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy following this natural disaster,” the Monarch said.

“We share your grief and wish to convey the Kingdom of Morocco’s solidarity and compassion in these difficult circumstances,” underlined the King, wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

The death toll in the two countries has surpassed 11,000 people in the world’s deadliest earthquake disaster in over a decade. The number of victims is climbing quickly two days after the earthquakes leveled cities and towns in both countries. Rescuers warn time is running out to find survivors amid freezing temperatures.

Turkey’s government is overwhelmed by the extent of the damage to infrastructure, logistical problems and aid needed to assist the 13.4 million people living in the disaster zone. Dozens of countries have so far offered help.
