Spain reiterates support for Morocco’s autonomy plan

Spain reiterated its support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the most serious, credible and realistic solution to end the regional conflict in the Sahara territory.

This reaffirmation came in a joint declaration issued at the end of the 12 Moroccan-Spanish high-level joint committee.

The two countries signed 20 cooperation deals and a Spanish credit line of 800 million euros.

“Morocco and Spain express their commitment to perpetuate excellent ties that they have always shared and express willingness to enrich these ties continuously,” reads the joint declaration.

Morocco and Spain ushered a new era of closer ties on the basis of mutual respect after Madrid supported Morocco’s autonomy plan as the only solution to the Sahara conflict.

The two countries both expressed commitment to defend human rights, democracy, the rule of law and Spain in particular lauded Morocco’s openness, progress and modernity under the leadership of King Mohammed VI

In this respect, Spain commended the new development model, advanced regionalization plan, and Morocco’s sustainable development strategy.

“Spain considers Morocco a credible regional and international player that plays a crucial role in the stability, peace and development of the Mediterranean region, the Atlantic and the Sahel-Sahara as well as Africa,” it said.

Morocco for its part commended Spain’s role and expressed hope that Spain’s EU presidency will contribute to closer ties between Morocco and the EU.

Morocco also highlighted the importance of the NATO summit in Madrid as well as Spain’s role in G20.

They both urged Mediterranean countries to consolidate the Union for the Mediterranean.

Spain supports Morocco’s cooperation with the Council of Europe and the OECD.

Both countries agreed to promote customs cooperation at land and sea borders following tests conducted on January 27.

The Moroccan Spanish high level meeting also highlighted the need for closer cultural cooperation, in part with the promotion of the Spanish language.
