Senegal: New road accident kills 22 people
A road accident killed Monday 22 people in the northern province of Louga in another tragedy, the second this month after the accident that killed at least 40 people more than a week ago.
A goods truck and a passenger bus collided at the entrance to Ngeun Sarr, a town in the Louga province.
President Macky Sall on Twitter announced the death of 19 people but toll shot up to 22 after following the death of three other people injured in the accident. Some 25 people were reported wounded.
This is the second accident in less than two weeks. On January 08, more than 40 people were killed when two buses collided in the center of the country. A busted tire caused the vehicle to lose track and slammed into another bus coming in opposite direction.
Following the tragedy, the government announced some 20 safety measures. However, many of these measures have been criticized as being unenforceable by transport professionals.
The measures include ban on the import of second-hand tires and ban on night buses. Road accidents officially kill 700 people each year in Senegal, a country of more than 17 million people.
