From Algiers, Arab League calls for safeguarding unity of Arab states

Curtain fell on the Arab League summit with a declaration stressing the need for safeguarding the unity and territorial integrity of Arab states.

The Arab League urged its members in its final declaration to work together to foster the national security of Arab states in its political, economic, food and energy dimensions, while ensuring a greater role for the League in the resolution and prevention of inter-Arab disputes.

Morocco’s ambassador to Egypt and its representative to the Arab League said that Rabat joined its voice to other Arab states in condemning Iranian actions aiming to destabilize the region and undermine its security.

Special attention was paid during the summit to the Palestinian cause as Arab leaders express unconditional support for the rights of the Palestinians to an independent state along the borders of 1967 with east Jerusalem as its capital in line with UN resolution 194 of 1948.

The final declaration reiterates attachment to the 2002 Arab Peace initiative in order to put an end to Israeli occupation of all Arab territories.

It also calls for continuing efforts to safeguard the sacred character of Jerusalem and protect it from attempts to alter its demography and its Muslim and Christian character.

In this respect, Arab leaders paid tribute to the actions undertaken, under the Chairmanship of King Mohammed VI, by the Al Quds committee and Bayt Mal Al Quds agency in the defense of Jerusalem and the rights of its inhabitants.

The Summit also recalled the centrality of the Skhirate agreement as a basis for a political solution to the crisis in Libya
