Morocco’s Royal Navy Participates in Grand African NEMO Exercise 2022

Moroccan Royal Navy has joined allies and partners for the multinational maritime exercise, Grand African NEMO 2022, taking place in the Gulf of Guinea.

The week-long exercise, which started Oct.11, is led by France. This year’s edition aims to enhance the maritime security to counter illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, piracy, drug trafficking, pollution, and rescue at sea.

Covering 5,707 kilometers of West African coastline from Senegal to Angola, the Gulf of Guinea is a key maritime region. Located at the crossroads of major shipping routes, the region is home to important natural resources, including oil, fish and minerals.

Besides Morocco, participants in the Grand African NEMO 2022 include France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Angola, Benin, Cabo Verde, Cameroon, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Nigeria, Sao-Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo and Brazil.

This maritime exercise, which aims to improve the stability and security of coastal Africa, enables participating countries to enhance maneuverability capabilities and interoperability by establishing communication and safety standards that strengthen regional maritime security.
