Sahara: Andean Parliament impressed by Laayoune’s socioeconomic development
Members of the Andean Parliament, led by Senate Speaker of Chile, Fidel Espinoza Sandoval, have been dazzled by the socio-economic development accomplished in the Moroccan Saharan city of Laayoune.
They toured the city on the sidelines of the first ever joint session held Monday by the Moroccan and Andean Parliaments in the capital of the Moroccan Sahara.
The event shows the strong support of the Latin American institution to the realistic and credible autonomy plan offered by Morocco under its sovereignty for a lasting and peaceful settlement of the Sahara regional issue.
Several local Sahrawi elected officials availed this opportunity to boast about the freedom and respect for human rights enjoyed by citizens across the Southern Provinces.
Fourteen MPs of the Andean Parliament visited on Monday the brand-new University Hospital of Laayoune, the medical school construction site, the trades & skills village, Women’s club, the library and the Town Hall wherein they were informed about a series of projects funded by the USA, Spain, the UAE, Italy and several other countries.
They were also provided detailed explanations about various development projects launched within the frame of the New Development Model set for the Southern provinces.
Morocco is an observer member of the Andean Parliament, which is the deliberative body of the Andean community (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Chile). The Andean Parliament is formed of 25 elected MPs, five from each member country.
