Morocco, Germany poised to step up cooperation in Security, counterterrorism

Top security officials from Morocco and Germany met in Rabat on Friday to discuss ways to boost cooperation in security and counterterrorism matters.

The high-level security meeting gathered General Director of Morocco’s National Security and Territorial Surveillance (DGSN-DGST) Abdellatif Hammouchi and the General Director of Germany’s Federal Police Dieter Romann, who is on a working visit to Morocco at the head of a large security delegation, the DGSN said in a statement.

The meeting discussed means of developing bilateral cooperation mechanisms in the area of security and strengthening the security partnership to serve the common interests of the two countries, in addition to the sharing of experience and expertise in the fight against terrorism and the various forms of transnational organized crime.

The German official stressed that this meeting shows the strong will of the German authorities to develop security cooperation with the Kingdom of Morocco, as it constitutes a starting point to intensify bilateral partnership in terms of security on solid foundations, based on credibility, trust and common interest.

He also praised the leading role played by Morocco in the fight against terrorism, expressing his high appreciation for the information previously provided by the Moroccan security services to Germany on terrorist threats, the statement pointed out.

For his part, Mr. Hammouchi stressed the importance of international security cooperation to counter the risks linked to terrorism and organized crime, highlighting the involvement and availability of the services of the General Directorate of National Security and Territorial Surveillance to develop this cooperation in order to consolidate security and stability and to respond firmly to the various threats and criminal dangers.

These talks are part of the common desire to advance bilateral cooperation between the two countries towards broader areas, particularly in the fight against terrorism, illegal immigration and border security, and to develop more flexible mechanisms for exchanging information, expertise and experience so as to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of bilateral cooperation operations in the field of security.

Morocco’s counterterrorism approach allowed the country to position itself among the safest countries in the world, as stated in the Global Terrorism Index 2022.

Morocco cooperates with different partners across the world in terms of sharing intelligence and expertise to tackle security threats.
