Omicron dominates Morocco’s new Covid-19 infections

Within a few days after Morocco reported the first Omicron case, the new variant now represents over 70% of new cases in the country with the peak of the new wave expected to be reached within two weeks, according to health ministry officials.

Morocco is now recording some 6000 cases daily compared with some 100 cases last month.

Morocco has maintained its borders closed to passenger traffic since November 29 and a government spokesman said international travel will resume once the new vague abates.

The health ministry urged people to take vaccine shots warning that for now 150 people are receiving Covid-19 treatment in hospital wherein the intensive care occupancy rate hit 4.6%.

By 6 January, 24.6 million people had received a first jab, 23 million had their second shot while 3.5 million received the booster jab.

Moroccan health officials say that the restrictive measures taken by Morocco have helped delay the peak and given additional time to reinforce collective immunity through vaccination.
