Covid-19: Mauritanian president tested positive
Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani has tested positive for Covid-19, the official news agency announced Tuesday.
“Medical examinations carried out on Monday by Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, after contracting a cold, showed a positive result and a contamination with Covid-19 with mild symptoms,” the Ami agency said.
Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, 65, has been in power since August 2019. Mauritania, which has a population of about 4.5 million, announced on Tuesday 42,672 cases of Covid for 872 deaths since the outbreak.
The Sahelian country became the first in West Africa and the 12th on the African continent to reach the World Health Organization (WHO) target of vaccinating at least 10% of the population against Covid-19 by the end of September 2021, according to the WHO.
