Omicron variant: Moroccan borders to remain closed till dec.31

The suspension of direct passenger flights to and from Morocco, which came into force on Monday November 29 for two weeks, will be extended till dec.31.

Sources close to air transport authorities confirmed that flights suspension from and to Morocco will be maintained until a further notice.

Royal Air Maroc, Morocco’s national carrier confirmed the news in a tweet and informed its customers that its flights will be canceled until December 31.

The Moroccan authorities had decided to suspend all direct passenger flights to the Kingdom because of the rapid spread of the new variant of the Covid-19 virus, Omicron, particularly in Europe and Africa.

This suspension is also part of the measures taken in order to preserve the achievements made by Morocco in the fight against the pandemic and protect the health of citizens.

The COVID-19 Scientific and Technical Committee which meets once a week to assess the health situation in the country said “The resurgence of the epidemic remains possible, especially with the emergence of the new Omicron variant.”

“Morocco’s achievements in the fight against the pandemic must be preserved and the health of its citizens must be protected,” it added.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has already described this new variant as dangerous and has also warned that its transmission could lead to a higher risk of reinfection, as vaccines have little resistance.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, Morocco confirmed 951,092 COVID cases, including 934,009 recoveries, and 14,794 deaths.
