Algeria lags behind in international internet speed ranking

Algeria has the fourth slowest internet service in the world ranking 174th out of 177 countries surveyed by the Speedtest Global Index, which measures mobile and fixed broadband internet services from around the world on a monthly basis.

Last December, Algeria’s Foreign Minister Sabri Boukadoum was unable to maintain a stable internet during an African Union summit, drawing backlash and mockery.

The oil and gas-rich country is not comparable in terms of reliable internet access with its neighbor Morocco where internet speed is 4.5 times faster.

Even landlocked countries in Africa that do not have direct access to undersea cables outperform Algeria in internet speed. This is the case of Malawi and Niger, for instance.

Slow internet in Algeria shows the little attention given to technology in the country which continues to lag behind in an array of digital solutions including banking services.
