Covid-19: Highest number of new confirmed cases overnight in Morocco; total reaches 2,251

The number of new coronavirus cases in Morocco reached an unprecedented level with 227 new confirmed cases between Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. and Thursday at 10:00 a.m.

The Moroccan Ministry of Health announced this Thursday morning that the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country has jumped to 2,251 with 227 new cases and that the total number of fatalities reached 128, representing however a downtrend in the daily death toll with one patient passing away overnight. Meanwhile, 247 patients have recovered from the virus and the number of recoveries continues to rise.

The rise in contaminated cases can be explained by the fact that contamination clusters have shifted Wednesday from family homes to some industrial companies still operating during this period of compulsory confinement.

Actually, a team leader in a factory specializing in the production of medical and paramedical equipment in Casablanca tested positive at Covid-19. During her working hours, she contaminated at least seventy employees in this industrial unit. Tests are ongoing to cover the whole staff of some 200 people.

The factory, specializing in the manufacture of medical and paramedical equipment for hemodialysis, was allowed to continue operating due to the essential nature of its activity.

The fear now is that the infected employees may have contaminated their families.

With the latest tally, Morocco has overtaken Algeria where the government currently reports 2,160 cases and 336 deaths. Egypt still has the highest number of cases in North Africa with 2,505 and 183 deaths. Tunisia has confirmed 780 cases and 35 fatalities.

North Africa remains the hardest hit region on the continent with a total of 7,524 cases. In total, 17,572 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Africa and 916 died of the infection.

Globally, coronavirus cases have reached 2,102,816 and fatalities rose to 136,119.
