Morocco foils smuggling attempt of 854 Kg of cannabis at Guergarate crossing point

Morocco’s security services deployed at the Southern Guergarate crossing point foiled on Sunday a smuggling attempt of 854 kg of cannabis, which were concealed in a truck registered in a sub-Saharan country.

The drugs were discovered hidden among agricultural products destined to an African country, says a press release issued on Monday by the National police.

The 38-year old driver and his assistant, 54, were arrested. An investigation was opened to identify their accomplices and determine the possible links between this smuggling operation and international drug-trafficking networks.

This drug-busting operation, carried out jointly by Moroccan police, Gendarmerie and Customs, is part of the sustained efforts deployed by the security services of the Kingdom at its southernmost tip of Moroccan Sahara, in combating regional & international drug trafficking and dealers.

Earlier this month, a similar joint operation led to the confiscation of seven tons of cannabis resin in the same region.
