EU to redirect €450 mln to support Morocco’s response to Covid-19

The EU will redirect €450 million promised to Morocco this year to help the country better respond to the coronavirus outbreak.

The amount includes €150 million that will be injected directly in the special fund created by Morocco to fund health system acquisitions and offset the social and economic repercussion of the pandemic, according to a joint statement issued following phone talks between foreign minister Nasser Bourita and the Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy, Oliver Varhelyi.

The remaining €300 million will be injected to help the government tackle the exceptional budgetary expenditures relating to the response to coronavirus.

Morocco appreciates the EU trust and solidarity, said foreign minister in a statement relayed by his department’s news portal.

The EU will support Morocco’s efforts in its fights against the pandemic in the health, economic and social fields, said the EU commissioner, commending Morocco’s “strong and necessary” measures to keep the COVID-19 spread under control.
