Over one ton of cannabis seized in Tangier, 370 Kg in Goulmima

Two separate drug-busting operations in Morocco enabled to seize 1,150 kg of chira in Tangier on Monday and 374 kg of cannabis near the southern city of Goulmima on Sunday.

The banned substance seized in Tangier was hidden in a fishing boat at the port of the same city.

The operation follows the preliminary investigation carried out by the judicial police of Tangier after the seizure on Sunday in the same city of 135 kg of chira, destined to be smuggled out by sea, said the National Police (DGSN) in a statement.

An individual was arrested in the Fnideq region for his alleged involvement in the organization of this criminal activity, the statement said, adding that security operations are still going on to shed light on the possible local and international ramifications of this criminal activity.

The 374 kg of cannabis seized near Goulmima were hidden in a car coming from northern Morocco, said the Moroccan police in another statement. The search carried out in the vehicle led to the seizure of two fake license plates and a sum of money. Two people involved in this smuggling attempt were arrested.

An investigation is underway to determine the possible links between this smuggling operation and international drug-trafficking networks.

These drug-busting operations are part of the sustained efforts deployed by Morocco’s security services to combat drug trafficking and dealers.

The International Narcotics Control Board has lately commended the sustained efforts engaged by Morocco in its fight against drugs trafficking and consumption, praising the country’s strategy focusing on prevention and treatment of addiction.
