Sahara: Jakarta Backs UN Efforts Seeking Lasting Political Solution

The Indonesian government has renewed its firm backing to the efforts engaged by the United Nations for reaching an enduring political solution to the Sahara issue.

This supportive stand to Morocco’s territorial integrity was voiced Monday in Jakarta by Indonesia foreign minister Mrs Retno Marsudi at a meeting held with Moroccan peer Nasser Bourita.

The Indonesian top diplomat also voiced her country’s readiness to bolster cooperation ties with Morocco particularly in the economic, academic, religious and security fields.

Mrs. Marsudi praised on this occasion the unwavering support of King Mohammed VI to the Palestinian cause and affirmed that her country backs the two-state solution recognized by the international community

 

Following their talks, the two ministers inked several accords aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two countries in various key sectors including fisheries, industry, fight against terrorism, money laundering and terror financing.

During his visit to this Southeast Asian country, Mr. Bourita was received by Indonesia vice-president Ma’ruf Amin before meeting separately with Mrs. Puan Maharani, speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives and ASEAN Secretary-General Dato Lim Jock Hoi.

Talks with the ASEAN Secretary General focused on the measures to be taken to further develop relations between the two sides.

The ASEAN-Morocco rapprochement is likely to facilitate the access of this Asian grouping to the African, European and Arab spaces and to contribute to the strengthening of relations between Rabat and the countries of South-East Asia, Bourita pointed out, expressing the Kingdom’s willingness to share its expertise and experience in many sectors with ASEAN member countries.

Morocco acceded to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) of ASEAN in 2016, before submitting its request to obtain the status of Sectoral Dialogue Partner within this regional grouping in 2018.
