Morocco, 2nd Most Connected Country in Africa
Morocco was ranked the second most connected country in Africa and the 33rd globally in a study by the Internet Live Stats website.
The website said in its annual internet users report 2016, that Morocco counts 20.068.556 internet users among a population estimated at 34.817.065, that is a penetration rate of 57.6%, the second highest rate in Africa after Seychelles with 57.9%.
Elsewhere in the Maghreb, Tunisia registered 5,472,618 users and 48.1% penetration rate, while Algeria lagged behind with 19.7% penetration rate and 7,937,913 users.
Globally, Iceland posted 100% penetration rate followed by Faeroe Islands and Norway with 98.5% and 98% respectively.
China, the country with most users (642 million in 2014), represents nearly 22% of the world’s total users, and has more users than the next three countries combined (United States, India, and Japan).
Among the top 20 countries, India is the one with the lowest penetration: 19% and the highest yearly growth rate. At the opposite end of the range, United States, Germany, France, U.K., and Canada have the highest penetration rate, with over 80% of the population in these countries having an internet connection
Live Internet Stats said that around 40% of the world population has an internet connection today, compared to 1% in 1995.
The number of internet users has increased tenfold from 1999 to 2013. The first billion was reached in 2005. The second billion in 2010. The third billion in 2014, the same source added.
