Moroccan IMAL Initiative Wins Global Climate Finance Accelerator Award

Moroccan IMAL Initiative for Climate and Development is one of five global winners of the Global Capacity Building Coalition (GCBC) Accelerator, an international program that helps developing economies strengthen their ability to finance climate action, reported Morocco World News. IMAL was chosen from 65 applicants drawn from think tanks, public institutions, private companies and academic organizations. The announcement was made on the sidelines of the World Bank and IMF Annual Meetings held in Bangkok October 12 through 18.

Under the program, the Rabat-based independent non-profit climate think-tank will receive more than 12 months of support to help develop national platforms that can direct investment towards climate and development priorities. Founded in 2022, IMAL describes itself as North Africa’s first independent, nonprofit climate think tank.

The selection comes as Morocco must find resources to meet its climate commitments. Its updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) targets a 53% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2035, which the article says will need an estimated $60 billion, while adaptation objectives require a further $36.1 billion. Public funds and international assistance alone may not meet the demand, making private investment and coordination more important.

IMAL has contributed to discussions on a national Country Platform for climate finance. In 2025 it brought together national stakeholders for a policy dialogue that helped advance the process. The proposed mechanism would connect Morocco’s development priorities and climate commitments with investment opportunities.

IMAL co-founder and executive director Iskander Erzini Vernoit said “Scaling up climate finance has never been more urgent”, calling on developed countries to meet their Paris Agreement obligations and on developing economies to find new ways to direct capital to national priorities. The partnership, he said, would help IMAL develop technical support to identify priority areas for investment.
