Morocco’s electricity system registered a fresh historic high in July, with peak demand reaching 8,400 megawatts (MW), according to figures presented by the national electricity and drinking water utility ONEE at its ninth board session.
The new peak surpasses the previous record of 7,990 MW set in 2025, marking an increase of 410 MW in a single year. The surge comes amid a combination of intense summer heat, expanding economic activity, and steadily rising energy needs nationwide.
ONEE also reported that national electricity demand reached 49 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2025, a 7.4% increase over the previous year, a trend the utility says confirms the sustained upward trajectory of consumption across households as well as the industrial and economic sectors.
The record comes as Morocco’s energy mix continues to shift decisively toward clean power. Renewable sources now account for roughly 46% of the country’s installed electricity generation capacity, up from just 37% in 2021, according to figures presented by Energy Transition Minister Leila Benali earlier this year.
Total installed capacity stood at 12.2 gigawatts (GW) in 2025, with about 5.6 GW coming from renewables.
Rabat’s official target is to push renewables to over 52% of installed capacity by 2030.
