Morocco, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, has established itself as “a model” in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), United Nations Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said.
The Kingdom has also made “tremendous progress” and demonstrated leadership in hosting major international summits, particularly on climate issues, which constitute one of the cornerstones of sustainable development, Dujarric told MAP in an interview on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the King’s accession to the Throne.
In this regard, the UN official commended the Moroccan government for submitting two Voluntary National Reviews to the United Nations on progress made toward achieving the SDGs. He described the initiative as “very important” and noted that it reflects “a commitment to transparency on the part of countries that undertake it, such as Morocco.”
The UN spokesperson further stressed that, thanks to the progress achieved under the Sovereign’s leadership in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals, the north-African kingdom stands as a model for other countries.
“What is important in sustainable development is what we call South-South cooperation,” he explained, adding that there is nothing more valuable for a developing country than receiving guidance from and following the example of another developing nation, such as Morocco, that has already achieved significant progress in sustainable development.
At both the continental and regional levels, Morocco has “a very important role to play in this area,” Dujarric said.
Addressing cooperation between the Kingdom and the United Nations on sustainable development, the UN official praised the “institutional” ties linking the two sides, noting that Morocco has aligned its national priorities with the SDGs developed and adopted by the United Nations.
Dujarric also welcomed the “very strong” cooperation with Morocco, particularly in the field of peacekeeping. “The participation of Moroccan troops in United Nations peacekeeping operations is a sign of great international solidarity,” he said.
