Tanger Med 100% green: leading maritime sustainability

The Tanger Med port complex has achieved a significant environmental milestone by switching to 100% renewable energy as of January 1, 2025, as part of its ambitious plan to reach carbon neutrality by 2030.

This initiative is backed by substantial investments of approximately 2 billion dirhams aimed at transforming the port’s energy infrastructure and reducing its environmental footprint. Since 2022, Tanger Med has been implementing a comprehensive decarbonization roadmap that combines green energy procurement with self-production capabilities.

The port’s dual strategy focuses on sourcing renewable electricity while developing autonomous energy solutions. A key innovation is the Onshore Power Supply (OPS) system, initially installed at the TC4 container terminal and scheduled for expansion across all docks. This technology allows docked vessels to connect to the port’s clean electricity grid instead of running their auxiliary engines, significantly reducing emissions and improving air quality for workers and nearby communities.

In parallel, Tanger Med is investing in self-generation infrastructure, including a 13 MW floating photovoltaic plant expected to become operational this year, further enhancing the port’s energy independence.

The port’s environmental commitment was recognized in December 2024 with ISO 50001 certification for energy management excellence. These sustainability initiatives strengthen Tanger Med’s appeal to global shipping lines, logistics operators, and manufacturers increasingly prioritizing partners with strong environmental credentials.

By aligning its operations with the International Maritime Organization’s 2050 sector-wide carbon neutrality goals, Tanger Med demonstrates that economic performance and environmental responsibility can successfully coexist, establishing itself as a pioneer in sustainable maritime infrastructure across the Mediterranean and African regions.
